《돌봄의 디자인》 - Caring by Design

《돌봄의 디자인》은 공공디자인을 만드는 행위가 아닌 유지하고 돌보는 실천으로 바라보는 전시입니다. 디자인은 주로 새로운 공간과 시설을 계획하고 조성하는 일에 집중해 왔습니다. 하지만 시민이 경험하는 공공성은 공간이 완성되는 순간보다 시간이 흐르는 동안 안전하고 쾌적하게 유지되는 과정 속에서 나타납니다. 우리가 사용하는 공간은 만들어진 이후 수많은 사람의 손길과 도구의 쓰임을 통해 의미를 획득합니다.
돌봄은 사회적 가치나 경제적 조건일 뿐만 아니라 건축물과 경관, 일상적 환경을 통해 구체화되는 공간적 구성 방식이기도 합니다. 본 전시는 먼저 도시·건축 ·실내 공간을 하나의 살아있는 운영 시스템으로 살펴봅니다. 다음으로 공적 공간의 지속을 가능하게 하는 보수, 수선, 점검, 청소 행위와 그 안에 깃든 노동의 가치를 조명합니다. 이를 위해 디자인의 결과보다 과정에, 형태보다 시간에, 설계보다 운영에 주목합니다. 《돌봄의 디자인》은 사람과 사물, 시간과 공간이 관계 맺는 방식을 통해 공공디자인을 바라보며 그 의미를 확장하고자 합니다.

Caring by Design reframes public design not as the act of making, but as the practice of sustaining and caring for what already exists. Design has largely concentrated on planning and creating new spaces and facilities. Yet the publicness that citizens actually experience emerges less at the moment a space is completed than through the ongoing process of keeping it safe and habitable over time. The spaces we use acquire meaning only after they are built, through the accumulated touch of countless hands and the continued use of tools that sustain them.

The exhibition begins by considering the city, the building, and the interior as a single living operational system. It then turns to the labor embedded in the repair, mending, inspection, and cleaning that makes the endurance of public space possible. In doing so, it attends less to the outcome of design than to its process, less to form than to time, less to planning than to operation. Caring by Design looks at public design through the relationships that people, objects, and time form with one another, thereby extending its meaning.
